FAQs About Skiving & Roller Burnishing Tooling
What are skiving tools used for?
Skiving tools remove material from the inside diameter of a metal cylinder in a controlled, single pass. They’re a core part of hydraulic cylinder bore finishing, where accuracy and surface quality both matter.
How is your roller burnishing process different from standard tooling?
Our roller burnishing process uses pressure compensated rollers that require no pre-setting, which means consistent surface finishing across every pass without the sizing steps other tooling systems need.
Can Sierra Machinery roller burnishing tools be used on machines you didn’t build?
Yes. Many customers retrofit their existing machines with our tooling, regardless of the original manufacturer. The tooling is built to deliver the same precise, consistent finish no matter what machine it runs on.
What size range do your skiving tools cover?
We offer over 200 tooling sizes ranging from 35mm to 508mm, covering nearly the full range of hydraulic cylinder bore finishing needs across industrial and mobile equipment applications.
How much material can your tooling remove in a single pass?
Our tooling removes material from 0.016 inches to 0.60 inches in a single pass, combining rough cutting, skiving, and burnishing into one operation instead of multiple steps.
