The world’s fastest skiving roller burnishing machine.

Sierra Machinery & Engineering manufactures both the Sierra Machinery skiving machine and Sierra’s patented tooling. Designed with the primary objective of finishing the inside diameter of a hydraulic cylinder in a minimum amount of time, with a maximum feed rate of 4 meters per minute (102″) and a retract speed of 112 meters per minute (300″).

For example, an 80mm (3.15″) I.D. tube by 1M (39.4″) part length with 2mm (0.040″) stock removal can be skived and roller burnished with one forward pass in 17 seconds. No other machine touches those numbers.

Sierra Machinery & Engineering not only designs and builds the Sierra USA CNC skiving machine in the United States, we also design and build the patented tooling used on all of our machines. There are over 200 tooling sizes available ranging from 35mm (1.38″) to 508mm (20″). Machines can be ordered for processing tubes in lengths from 1M (39.4″) up to 11M (25 ft) with a minimum part length capability of 150mm (6″) on all machines.

We use the latest technology and innovations, with only the highest quality parts and proprietary machine control logic developed entirely in house, the same logic that gives the Sierra Machinery its cutting edge and makes it the world’s fastest skiving machine on the market. Every machine we build is backed by the same CNC machining and precision manufacturing standards we apply across our entire shop floor.

Ask our customers about the Sierra Machinery.

Our customer base consists of most of the largest manufacturers of farming, mining, and industrial equipment produced in the world. Sierra Machinery machines are located on every continent, with many of our customers running multiple machines in production.

The roller burnishing process itself is what sets the final surface finish and dimensional accuracy on the bore, and it’s a step we’ve spent decades refining alongside our skiving operation. Sierra Machinery & Engineering places a high value on safety. Our machine protects the operator and others during operation using light curtain technology, safety features that keep the operator safe through the whole cycle.

The team behind every machine includes decades of experience. When a customer calls with a problem, they reach the people who actually built the machine. That same team also stands behind our patented Sierra Machinery Tooling, our in-house welding and fabrication work, and our tooling and molds capabilities, all built at the same Sparks, Nevada facility.

FAQs

FAQs About Skiving & Roller Burnishing Machine Manufacturer

What is a skiving machine used for?

A skiving machine removes material from the inside diameter of a tube or cylinder in a controlled, precise pass. It’s a critical step in manufacturing hydraulic cylinders, where the bore needs to be both accurate and smooth before it goes into service.

How is a CNC skiving machine different from other bore finishing methods?

A CNC skiving machine uses computer-controlled feed and retract speeds to remove material with tight repeatability, which is harder to achieve with manual or older mechanical methods. Our Sierra USA machine is built entirely in house, from the machine control logic to the tooling that runs on it.

What is the roller burnishing process, and why does it matter?

The roller burnishing process follows skiving and works the bore surface to its final finish and dimensional accuracy. It’s what gives the inside diameter its smooth, precise finish without a separate honing or grinding step.

How fast is the Sierra Machinery skiving machine compared to others on the market?

Our machine can skive and roller burnish an 80mm ID tube at 1 meter in length, with 2mm of stock removal, in a single forward pass, in 17 seconds. That speed comes from proprietary control logic we developed and refined in house over decades.

What tube lengths and diameters can your skiving machines handle?

Our machines process tubes from 1 meter up to 11 meters in length, with a minimum part length capability of 150mm. Tooling is available in over 200 sizes, ranging from 35mm to 508mm.
