What is a skiving machine used for?
A skiving machine removes material from the inside diameter of a tube or cylinder in a controlled, precise pass. It’s a critical step in manufacturing hydraulic cylinders, where the bore needs to be both accurate and smooth before it goes into service.
How is a CNC skiving machine different from other bore finishing methods?
A CNC skiving machine uses computer-controlled feed and retract speeds to remove material with tight repeatability, which is harder to achieve with manual or older mechanical methods. Our Sierra USA machine is built entirely in house, from the machine control logic to the tooling that runs on it.
What is the roller burnishing process, and why does it matter?
The roller burnishing process follows skiving and works the bore surface to its final finish and dimensional accuracy. It’s what gives the inside diameter its smooth, precise finish without a separate honing or grinding step.
How fast is the Sierra Machinery skiving machine compared to others on the market?
Our machine can skive and roller burnish an 80mm ID tube at 1 meter in length, with 2mm of stock removal, in a single forward pass, in 17 seconds. That speed comes from proprietary control logic we developed and refined in house over decades.
What tube lengths and diameters can your skiving machines handle?
Our machines process tubes from 1 meter up to 11 meters in length, with a minimum part length capability of 150mm. Tooling is available in over 200 sizes, ranging from 35mm to 508mm.
